Announcements

From the Director

Summer greetings!

My name is Kevin Ryan and I’m both honored and excited to be serving as your next Chapter Director of NPM Detroit. Please allow me to introduce myself: I currently serve as the Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Thomas a’Becket in Canton and also as the Music Director for the Agape Young Adult Ministry of the Pontiac Vicariate. I also sing in the Archdiocesan Chorus and am currently pursuing a master’s degree in theology from Sacred Heart Major Seminary. I have served on the NPM Detroit Board of Directors for two years and am looking forward to beginning my tenure as Chapter Director. I would like to thank everyone currently serving on the Board for their support and hard work as we look forward to another great year of workshops, retreats, social gatherings, and musical events!

As we spend the summer months relaxing and refreshing our spirits, I would like to highlight a few upcoming events. First off, if you’re planning on attending the NPM Convention in St. Louis, be sure to check the bulletin board and our Facebook page for information on the Detroit Chapter Dinner. We hope to see you there! At the end of August, NPM Detroit will be hosting a fantastic workshop for parish choir singers of all levels at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. This three-night workshop will feature presentations by some of Detroit’s most respected experts in liturgical music, including Deborah Frontczak, Norah Duncan IV, and Steve Petrunak. Your choir members will love the opportunity to build camaraderie with other parish choirs, rehearse and perform beautiful music, and learn how to sing their very best. Please see the flyer included in this newsletter for complete information. Finally, save the dates for our two fall events: the NPM Detroit Fall Retreat on October 5th at Sacred Heart Major Seminary and the annual St. Cecilia Sing at the Cathedral on November 16th.

I invite you to stay in touch with us by liking our Facebook page (NPM Detroit) or by visiting our website: www.npmdetroit.org. We continually update our social media outlets with the latest and greatest happenings from NPM Detroit and the Archdiocesan Music Office. You can also register to become a member of NPM Detroit or renew your registration quickly and conveniently right on our website. Feel free to contact me at any time with questions or comments at kevin.ryan@abecket.org.

Have a safe, fun, and relaxing summer! I look forward to seeing you at NPM Convention or at one of our great upcoming events.

Blessings,

Kevin Ryan

NPM-Detroit Vocal Technique Workshop

Saturday, February 1, 2014

9:00am – 2:00pm

Registration and Continental Breakfast begin at 8:30am

St. Linus Catholic Church

6466 N Evangeline St. Dearborn Heights, MI 48127

David Troiano, Clinician

NPM Detroit invites all Cantors, Choir Members, and Music Directors to this Vocal Technique Workshop. David Troiano holds a Master Degree from Wayne State University in Voice and a DMA from University of Michigan in Organ Performance. He also earned a MAPM in Pastoral Ministry from SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary. He served as Choral director for the International Symphony of Port Huron and Sarnia and is currently directing the Filarets Chorus of Detroit. Mr. Troiano has been a music minister in the Archdiocese for 41 years and is currently the music director at St. Clare of Montefalco in Grosse Pointe Park.

After lunch, we will have a Master Class where participants can sing for Mr. Troiano and receive feedback on their technique. Watching, listening, and participating in this process, even if you are not the singer, is a great way to learn more about your own voice, as we all tend to have similar vocal issues! If you don’t get a chance to sign up to participate in the Master Class in advance, you may still have an opportunity to sign up that morning, so come prepared and bring several copies of your music.

For questions or info about parish group discounts (5 or more), contact Rob Buzaitis at 248-880- 0528 or rob.buzaitis@gmail.com.

Continental Breakfast and Lunch will be provided.

Fee: Members of NPM Detroit – $15 Non-Members – $25

St. Cecilia Sing 2013

St. Cecilia Sing

Sponsored by NPM Detroit

3:00 – 5:00 PM

Choirs please arrive by 2:15 PM for instructions and warm-ups.

Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament

9844 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48202

Each year, parishes, schools, dioceses, NPM chapters, and other worshiping communities come together to
raise their voices in song in a national festival of sacred music. Everyone is invited to participate in this special
event, which is sponsored by the NPM Standing Committee for Choir Directors.

The memorial of Saint Cecilia (patron saint of music) on November 22 is an excellent opportunity to gather
musicians together for an event of sacred song in conjunction with other choirs and musicians.

This year NPM-Detroit will participate in the St. Cecilia Sing by sponsoring a choral festival with communal
song and prayer on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Each
participating choir is invited to present a maximum of two selections, with a total performance time of no more
than 5-7 minutes. Choirs should arrive at the Cathedral by 2:15 pm for instructions and general warm-ups.

Be sure to register early as participation is limited to ten choirs!

For questions, please contact Mary Roesch 248-446-8700 ext. 105

Registration fee is $25.00 per choir. Deadline to register is November 8.
